The deep freeze has taken the leaves of my little snowball bush. My sedum seems to be doing quite well. As for my hibiscus, only spring will reveal the truth about how it has held up. With record breaking low temperatures, I am definitely ready for the deep freeze to end and spring to begin!

Me too. I always worry about my fruit trees this time of year, they always pull out of it once spring comes but it doesn't stop me from worrying about it. Bring on spring!!

Where are you at? I'm in Connecticut and it has been a wild ride with the weather, we dropped fifty degrees in just a few hours. Luckily its not as bad as in the Midwest or northern New England, they have really been suffering from the cold.

I'm in the mountains of South Carolina. I couldn't imagine living anywhere up there! I did not come equipped for the cold! It got down to 5 the past two nights, but it's supposed to be back up to 60 by Saturday. So we get ice and the possibility of tornados! Joy!

I feel so sorry for all people who have to deal with freezing weather! It must be awful. In Poland, it's still relatively warm, around 12c. It's January, so my miniature roses should go dormant. Instead, they start producing leaves. It worries me a little:(

We'll get it in a week or so Claudine, when America has finished with it, the jet stream will push it our way.

Warm here for the time of year too, 10C :)

Yup, it's gonna get very cold here - although not as bad as the US I'm sure. Have you heard about people trying to create snow from hot water? It needs to be really cold to do it, and lots of people have been burning themselves by throwing hot water into the air!!

I heard some folks got burned.

They know how to do it properly in Russia, just throw it off the balcony so someone else gets it :D

Fortunately, most trees and bushes can survive cold temperatures. However, a prolonged deep freeze could hurt some plants. I will define a prolonged deep freeze as one that lasts at least 10 days. The solution is to cover your plants with an old blanket, towel or sheet. Covering them should protect them from the cold.

Nobody turned the water off to the fountain in town. When the water froze, it looked like an ice tree. All of my plants are covered, I'm just worried that the roots didn't have time to re-establish the roots well enough. My sedum seems to be doing good regardless of the weather. It still has sprouts that are green all around the stems that I cut back. My ice plants and jasmine still have leaves and they were some of the last of the ones that I put to ground. I have hope!
