I went out the other day to walk through the meadow, and check out the blackberries. There are lots and lots of them, but they are some of the tiniest berries that I have ever seen. I am used to seeing the large wild blackberries that they have in Western Washington, as big as the end of your thumb. These little guys are a tiny species, and are only about the size of a small blueberry. It is good that they are plentiful, because it is going to take a lot of them to make anything with the berries.
We have had a lot of rain this spring, so it shouldn't be that they didn't get enough water to grow well.
