What do you mean there's another squirrel waiting?

The missus was on the patio a while ago and one climbed the bird table to lean out from the pole and help himself to the hanging nuts.
It took no notice of her "Oi", so she picked up a ball and lobbed it. Caught it fair and square, deadeye Jane, and hr dropped to the ground. He wasn't hurt, it was an underarm throw with no power, but he retreated in stages, looking indignant, and has been cautious about returning.

These squirrels are very jumpy. Walk into the garden and they are off, bounding down the top of the six-foot party fence the whole length of the garden and then up into a tree.

Not so all of them over the years. Many years ago there was one which would come up to the patio doors and stand on her hind legs with her paws on the glass trying to attract your attention to let you know there were no nuts in the feeder.
My wife would get a handful and oblige. Once, because the squirrel hadn't retreated far enough, she started to very slowly open one door. The squirrel put a paw on the edge of the door and "helped" her open it.
