Have any of you tried "stealing potatoes" ? Before the plants die and you pick them all, you can take one potato per plant caring not to disturb the rest of the plant without causing harm or lowering production. So we steal a few meals before they are done each year. Mostly for creamed peas and potatoes as they are not ripe at the same time when planted at the same time, I've never tried to plant time them out to coincide.

I have done it with container grown potatoes. You can tip them out and steal a couple from the outside, then slide them back in.

There's a release of hormonal auxins when a potato is picked off the plant. It's one of the plants' defenses against attacks.
