For the last several years, I haven't planted a thing due to my work schedule (16 hr days). I am back to being a housewife again after many years and have started gardening again. I am pretty much pulling out 80% of my flower beds and starting over. They need to be culled of the overgrown shrubs, leggy bushes and just being generally pitiful. We live in the city & my husband is a "lush green yard" kind of guy, so getting him on the vegetable garden bandwagon is going to be a struggle. I do have free reign in the current flower beds. :) One of those will become my new herb garden, though I don't which one yet. I am still very much in the planning stages. I am looking forward to see all the ideas & photos everybody posts!

Welcome back to your gardening liftstyle. I took some time off a while back from gardening and missed it. I would like to have a larger garden than I do but I do not live in my own home I share with family members that do not like flowers. What type of flowers do you plan to plant?

Welcome, perpetualsharon! I'm sure you and your husband will reach a compromise...lush green lawns are fine, but look much better when complemented by flower beds, edibles, shrubs etc. :)

Oh, you really have your work cut out for you. I've just spent the entire morning and part of the afternoon in the yard and I don't have of the kind of overgrowth to deal with that you do. I hope you can section it off and work bit by bit without getting overwhelmed.

Sounds exciting already! My favorite herbs are sweet basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, mint, and chives. I grow all of these in containers as my area for gardening only consists of flowers :) Whatever your favorite herbs are, go for it!

Thanks for the welcome everybody! :) I'm already running into a bit of hemming and hawing by the hubby. He thinks when we remove the bad shrubs we should replace with more shrubs. Now, I agree shrubs have their place in landscaping but not a lot in my flower beds. He thinks it should be pretty all year. It snows here. We don't put outdoor lights up at Christmas, why do I need evergreen shrubs when we don't even go out in the winter. A blanket of snow is enough landscaping for me in the winter. I have lots of planning to do ahead of me. It seems I am going to have to show him a PAPER plan in order for him to be able to envision what I see. We've been married 12 yrs together 16, his mom told me to just do what I want, he'll get over it. lol
