Sky pencil holly in container with asparagus fern

I have a sky pencil holly that I’ve had in a pot along with asparagus fern. Seems that the asparagus fern has taken over the roots of the holly, so I have completely untangled the root system. The roots are now soaking in water, and I want to know if I should plant directly into the potting soil or if there’s something else I need to do first. Thx.
