I live in zone 5 in Indiana and for two years in a row, I have had petunias self seed in an outdoor pot. That stayed outdoors during the winter.

How common or uncommon is this?

Seems common. I ordered 400 Seeds. Mistake do you realize how small they are?

Have more take about a 6 inch cutting put it in a solo cup with water change water each day. They are very easy to start.

I love plants that self seed. It's how we created our flower beds.

Our winter was the warmest on record for our area and we have been able to grow zone 6 perinnials for a few years.

Collect the seeds from Petunias, Marigolds and Zinnias and several others.

I've been fascinated by starting from cuttings but found might introduce bugs with them where you wouldn't with seed.

Still going to do my cuttings but be very vigilant.

I collect seeds from any plant that I can. 80% of our flower beds for are plants that self seed or I started them from seed.

We did a little math and we have saved over $1,000 in the last 2 years from self seeding and starting perinnials from seed.
