Me and my girlfriend came across a planter full of strawberry plants labeled “Free” on a walk yesterday. Decided it’d be a fun project, but not sure how to get started.

We’re thinking it’s definitely overcrowded and the soil is questionable so we’re gonna move them into new pots soon. Probably lots of pruning but not sure how exactly.

Curious what some gardening veterans have to say and if you have any tips for us. Thanks in advance 🙂

Correct - lots of pruning. Leave only the roots and the crown. If you look closely at the freshest leaf, you will see it is coming from a central point where all leaves come from - the crown. Don't harm the crown but get rid of all other leaves, fruiting stems and runner connections. The crown must always be above the soil level. Trim long roots to fit into the pots. Use the best potting soil or good compost.

Looks like they just cleaned out their strawberry bed. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with the previous owners of those plants. I'm sure they can give you some tips for your area.
