I want to grow some indoor plants to help freshen up the home office a bit. Nothing fancy or big. Just something to lively up the place and bring in some fresh air. My mom use to grow indoor plants all the time when I was young, but it caught on with me until now. Would a simple fern do?

Ferns are fine for your purpose. My mother grew mint indoors.....................everywhere. Where ever there was a window there was some kind mint or herb. She was old school. She didn't grow anything that she couldn't eat or make something out of it. I am like her. I once tasted a fern. I will stick to mint.

My mother is the same, she has more indoor plants than I can count:p
A fern or a mini fern sounds like a great idea! They look really pretty and are very easy to grow. You could also consider an ivy. It's a great plant for purifying the air.

One of my favorites is the Red Rubber Plant. So easy to maintain and hard to kill. I had one for years and when we relocated
I passed it to my mother and it is now about 15 years old. It had been with us for so long it was like leaving a family member.

Ivy is good, the one pictured above is a great little ivy plant to have indoors. I have also heard good things about the snake plants ability to improve indoor air quality. The only issue is that snake plant may not be pet safe. I know it is not bird safe, but if you have any other pets you might want to check and make sure it's OK for them before you buy one.

I like snake plants!:)
A bamboo plant would be a good choice too. I heard that it removes toxins from the air and acts as a natural humidifier. Also, it looks really pretty:

I think a fern sounds good for what you're wanting....some herbs and such seem pretty low maintenance, as well, and they have the added benefit of helping your cooking :).

That's true, I completely forgot about herbs!:) They're great plants, because they're very easy to grow. Also, most of them smell really nice. Personally, I love the scent of mint. It's very refreshing.

Forgot to put up the warning... do not get this plant if you have pets or children. It is poisonous and it can harm them. Get only if you do not have pets or children that may try to eat it.

"Ingestion can cause severe irritation to the mouth and throat and may also be an irritant to the G.I. tract. Children as well as cats, dogs and other family pets that may nibble on the foliage are all at risk.
Pictured is one of the pink cultivars, of which over a thousand exist, commonly sold in garden centers. There are two main forms cultivated - the more common "fancy leaved" (heart shaped leaves) and "lance leaved" (lance head shaped leaves).

Caladiums grow from corms and can be easily propagated by dividing the tubers. These frost tender plants are typically grown as a tender bulb, or as a house plant, in colder climates with minimum temperatures of 75F in summer and 55F in winter. If humidity is low mist the leaves daily. Most varieties thrive in bright indirect light with sun resistant types becoming available." (Blankees, http://blankees.com/house/plants/caladium.htm).

Aloe Vera is super easy to grown and really, really hard to kill. I had one in my office for years and I neglected it completely for months at a time. It did get some natural sunlight but I always forgot to water it. Yet it remained hardy and green year after year. I finally passed it down to someone else to enjoy.

Oh no:( It's such a pity! I really love how this plant looks, but I couldn't grow it, because I have a small dog who doesn't listen to me and chews on the weirdest things when he's bored.
Thank you for the warning.

Here is one that is non poisonous and very pretty as well as low maintenance you may try. It's called a Christmas Cactus.

It's a lovely plant! I like those pink flowers. By any chance, do you know how can I propagate it? My mother grows a Christmas Cactus indoors, I'm sure she'd let me take a cutting from it:)
