Looking for a tree that offers good shade (grow Zones 10a/10b), but has a relatively small base, with roots that don't sprawl (like a Fichus).

The size of tree's root system will be roughly commensurate with its canopy. How large a tree do you want?
Some trees such as Ficus are more prone to surface rooting, but overall it will be factors such as topography, depth of soil and water penetration that will determine how many exposed roots develop.

Thankyou Marck. Decided against putting in anymore trees. Concentrating more on drought tolerant bushes - Grevillea, Sweet-Pea-Shrub and Bougainvillea.
