Hello,
I'm noticing some color change to my Rattlesnake Plant and wanted to see if I can assess and fix the problem before it gets worse. Most of the leaves are a deeper green but I've noticed that few of them are turning a lighter shade of green (even the burgundy under these particular leaves are faded compared to the darker ones). From what I have read online, the color change seems to be a lighting issue and so I wanted to double check with you guys.
I brought this guy home on January 19th and first watered it on the 28th after feeling that the top .5 inch or so was dry to the touch. I did the typical luke warm water bath under the sink until water drained from the nursery pot drainage holes (careful to avoid wetting the leaves as much as possible).
I took a photo at 6:00am and then again at 11:00am and you can see that the plant is still moving as it should and doesn't seem to be drooping. I also see no sign of severe browning.
I have also included a photo of my living room that was taken at 11am to see how much natural light comes in and reaches the area where this particular plant lives (left side of photos with the hanging planters). Although my window is Western facing, neighboring buildings block some of the light I would otherwise get. I chose this plant (with its neighbors being a Dracaena and Golden Pothos) because it is said to tolerate lower light conditions. I still felt it can use a few more hours of light than what it is given in that area and so I purchased a full spectrum "Grow Light" and placed the light approximately 2.5 feet away from the plant (see photos). I have the light set on a timer to turn on around sunset (5pm) and remain on until 10pm (giving it an additional 5 hours of lighting).
Am I now giving it too much light? Is there a reliable and affordable "light meter" on the market to better assess lighting conditions? Should I purchase a better light? Or is it something else altogether?
Thank you in advance for the help!
