This is not gardening related but I am hoping someone can give an idea of what to do with this problem. When it rains hard with high winds one of the window in one of the bedrooms leaks, it rained hard yesterday and rain poured thru the window as if it was open. The windows were replaced less than 5 years ago the people have been out to check the problem but could not offer a solution.

The wall, carpet and floor under the carpet are soaked. My daughter used to towels to help soak some of the water up as it poured thru the window for over an hour as it stormed outside. The damage to the house would have been worse had we not been home to soak up some of the water.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this situation?

first you need to define where the water is coming in...is it between the top and bottom sections (if two pieces)? Is it around the edges, or between the panes of glass and inside the frame.

Next time it rains throw a handful of flour or talc powder against the inside of the glass and window frame. As it gets wet, you will see it clearly and can define where the water is entering.

Sadly, it sounds as if the windows may have been installed incorrectly, if this has been ongoing since they were replaced. You do need to get it repaired as that amount of water is not good for the structure and could cause unseen mold issues.

It has been going on for a few years now. I am concerned about the mold in the walls and floor. It has rained hard for a few days and the carpet is soaked, we may have to pull the carpet up, we may not be able to save the carpet.

First or second story window? Coming through the sash or glass or on the sill or from behind the frame? From the top or bottom?

First thing to do if you can is to inspect the outside if you can. Could simply need caulking or resealing or the flashing or lintel is bad. If your house is brick it may not be the window but the mortar is crumbling and leaking. Could even be a leaking gutter or roof above the window and not the window itself.

Best get someone to take a professional look at it if you can't find an obvious reason though. That much moisture will definitely cause rot and mold which if left unattended will result in structural damage and more costly repairs.

I had this same problem before, and finally found out that the window was installed upside down. It might be the possibility that is causing the leak. If it is not the problem, re-caulking might help.

The installer looked at the window last year and told us that the track has to be clean so the water will flow out but that has not taken care of the problem. The house is a split so all the rooms are on one floor. The concern is if there is no one home the damage is going to be even more serious than what happens when someone is home to help pad the window and floor to soak up some of the water.
