Wind and fast temperature changes are the most frequent causes of this but, to a lesser degree insects, thrips mainly, can also do this. You can't do anything about the weather but you can about the insects. Insects that affect pomegranates are thrips, white fly and scale for the most part. Just to make sure why don't you spray with neem oilno heavy wind but yes summer started here @Chuck
