As most know here, I'm reluctant to call any plant in my yard a weed; however, there are a very few exceptions to this rule and I believe the WEED shown in your pic is what I've identified as Yellow Nutsedge (or at least a variant of nutsedge. http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/WEEDS/yellow_nutsedge.html
Supposedly it grows a "nut", but I think it's more properly called a tuber that is edible, but I just haven't bothered harvesting them. You can't pull them enough, because they'll just grow back and very quickly. I do pull them and use as mulch, but to combat them I shade them out with other plants.
Yellow nutsedge or nut grass (Cyperus Esculatus) is called nut grass because of the nut shaped tuberous root. Is difficult to dig out by hand and the recommendation for its control is systemic herbicide, in the UK a Glyphosphate based weedkiller will control it effectively.
