Planting for exposed windy conditions?

Hello everyone! I have a small terrace to the side of my flat which gets good sun from morning until 2 in the afternoon however it is a very exposed spot on the 5th floor of a building situated on a hill outside London. As a result we also get a lot of gusty south / southwesterly wind during the year regardless of season and severe northerly wind in winter.
Regardless of what we've grown so far only some felicia have survived and thrived. I have a planter (0.6Wx2Lx0.45D) which I'd like to plant with something, preferably hardly, resistant to the wind and likes good sun but the roots can't be too deep. I'm open to all sorts of flowers, plants, shrubs etc and I'm hoping someone might be able to throw some ideas my way. Apologies for the very specific nature of the question but any advice greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!

Welcome @johnmk . A picture of the planter would help. (0.6Wx2Lx0.45D...units meters?

If you have the depth, one thing that helps is to use the planter walls to shield the young plants by providing freeboard. The Felicia is relatively short and the container may have blocked the winds for it allowing it to survive.

Some other flowering plants that are similar would be worth checking out including ‘Tweety’ Coneflower, ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ Hosta, DianthusCherry Vanilla‘, Heuchera ‘Delta Dawn, Dwarf Lobelia, ‘Snow Lady’ Daisy.

Hi @Meadowlark Yes, the size is in meters, apologies! Many thanks for the list..starting my research immediately! Actually some lobelia did quite well in a smaller planter 2 years ago, so I think you might be on the right track with these. I'm not sure why I didn't consider a hosta previously, but that variety looks really good. Thanks again!
