I am concerned because I notice that near the base of my peach trees, two of them have these sticky gummy looking masses, like pitch on them. I dont mulch around them, instead i put those brown rubber mats around them to hold down the grass. Now I am wondering if there are borers in the trees. If so what kind of treatment should i use to kill them?

It can be caused by numerous factors. Look up Gummosis to learn why your tree is doing this.

Is that a grafted variety of peach tree? Because, if it is, it looks to me, like the graft is blackening (dieing) and it has put out roots ?
Or is that dried grass stuck to it?

You have Peach Tree Borers. They are the caterpillars of a Clear-winged Moth. Pyrethroids will prevent an infestation, but once they get inside the tree you have to dig them out. Early next spring start spraying the lower 2' of trunk on a regular basis (follow the directions on the label) and you should be able to prevent next year's problem. Another tactic is to wrap that area with paper tree trunk wrap.

thank you, that's what I wondered, but I haven't grown a peach tree or any stone fruit tree for over 25 yrs
