Good Morning all,
I have an area next to the house that sits in partial shade and has a bunch of wires and uglies hanging on it. I'd like to pot a climbing something and found passion vine. Has anyone had luck growing them or have any other suggestions? I hung some lattice to cover the ugly and am wanting something that will fill in. The area gets just a few hours of afternoon sun.
Also have an area that is sandy and no shade, any recommendations for small plants there? It sits under a tree and is now covered with cedar mulch.

Passion vine will grow great where you are. A word of advice. Do not plant it in the ground. I made that mistake and it took 3 years to finally eradicate it. The stuff came up from underground runners as far away as 50 feet

Wow, I had planned on potting it but should I consider something else? I just stopped by Lowes and was very quickly looking at climbers that would do well in shade and that was the only thing I saw. I would love some other options though, especially since the pot will have holes drilled in the bottom and I can totally see that happening.
And thanks for the fertilizer tips, I got some organic stuff this weekend.

How about a cross vine? I don't think that they are invasive but I could be wrong

I'll google it. Thanks! I'm going to head to the local nursery probably this coming weekend and see what they have but I'd like to have a good idea what I want.

Ohhh that looks wonderful and it attracts hummingbirds as well and seems to flower in the fall and spring. That is definitely going on my list!

We have a crossvine on our fence, and it is in part shade. It definitely isn't invasive for us--I'm still hoping for starts to come up from the roots so I can plant more. Bees, hummingbirds, and humans love this vine! Just make sure you get crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) and not its close cousin trumpet vine, which is invasive.

Thanks for asking the question tbendl and thanks to you marlin garden for the
photo of the cross vine. I just looked it up too. Is yours the Tangerine Beauty? I have a fence that needs it so desperately.

I had this creeper which grew well and yielded flowers and fruits. Our gardener cut it deep and it died.

I am growing a passion vine for the second year. It's kept in a container and is doing very well after being relocated from another spot. It sits in part shade and indirect sun much of the day. It now has a new companion, a different passion flower variety, and I am hoping the two will cross pollinate and create fruit.

In your area it may not overwinter very well, so be sure you protect the crown, or if you decide to keep it in the pot, bring it indoors.

Thanks Chanell, I will keep that in mind. Last winter I just moved all my pots up against the house, just about everything survived but with the exception of a lantana, and whatever creeping vine I get, everything else will be in the ground. I'm leaning toward the cross vine but won't know what the local gardener carries until this weekend when I go plant shopping... Woohoo
