Passion fruit growing

Hi, I live in southern California and started growing passion fruit 8 months ago. I have 2 plants, and both are growing very slow. I think my pot is too big (1.5 feet across, 3 gallons). I havent been using mulch or compost and I water every day, but I was wondering if there is anything i should do to make the environment more compatable for the plants?
