I have two orchids that bloomed when I first got them. The flower eventually died and has not bloomed ever again. It's been almost two years. What am I doing wrong?
Orchids are not fussy but do want certain things to happen. They need regular watering and fertilizing, don't let the roots get dried out. They need a humidity zone that is constant so set the plant on a layer of pebbles so that the roots are not sitting in water. At night they need to have a drop of ten to fifteen degrees F so move them to a cooler spot in the house.
If the leaves are still green and alive the only thing you're not doing is feeding it. It's hard to get them to rebloom, but it is possible and I think it sometimes may take two years. Just read up on your specific orchid so you know what its needs are.
Agreed with the above. You can get special orchid pot holders which have a ledge inside to allow water to drain off (the pot sits on the ledge, keeping it off the bottom of the pot) - I always make sure that there is water in that bottom section so that if it evaporates then it will go to the roots. The locations is also important - they don't like direct sunlight but they do like a warm spot.
Orchids need plenty of water, about a quarter cup WARM water once a week. Orchids also need to be in a humid room. Only experience I ever had with them was putting them in flower arrangement when I worked at a flower shop 8 years ago. But with my recent stay in the hospital this month, recieving lots of flowers, one being an orchid in a little pot, I needed to do lots of research to keep it alive.
