Anyone here have experience with oats? Going to plant a small plot (60x60ish). Wondering whether I should plant in rows or broadcast evenly.
Rain....what's that Chuck? Its been since late May here for even a drop of rain and it is getting really bad. 2011 type conditions. We use a lot of oats here as deer feed/wildlife in fairly small plots. I just scratch the soil to break it up a little and then broadcast like feeding chickens. Then the main thing is to pray for rain.

Where is lake Livingston?Howdy, neighbor. Good to see another Lake Livingston area member here.
I've used it several times in cover crops, and I'd say the answer to your question depends on how you plan to use it.
If harvesting for grain, then plant in rows. If using it for soil building, then broadcast it.
I have found it is best used for cover crop and deer plots when mixed with other more hardy grains such as cereal rye (Elbon rye) and/or alfalfa. They tolerate much lower temps than oats which I loose when temps fall into the low 20's which seems to happen just about every year here. If you only have oats, then you won't have anything until spring.
Thats what comes up with a click on your posted location.Where is lake Livingston?
Strange. I certainly did not put that there. In Georgia and have never heard of Lake Livinston. Time to investigate!Thats what comes up with a click on your posted location.
