Zone 7 (or 6b?), Northwest Arkansas
I have 2 mature oak trees in my backyard. One of the trees has a lot of leaves curled with some growth on the underside. I wouldn't be surprised if the other tree has the same problem as the branches of the two trees brush against each other. I noticed the leaves looking like this when I moved into this house late last summer, but since they grew back like this after the winter, I thought I should look into it. Would anyone know if this is a disease, or parasite, or other, and if it's treatable?
I've just noticed that one of the oak trees has a fairly large hole in it (about the width of a finger). I had noticed that the tree was oozing from that spot when I first got the house, but there really wasn't a hole at that time, and I was told not to worry about it. It's facing away from the house, so I had forgotten about it until just recently. I would imagine it's some kind of boring insect, but I don't think I've seen a hole that big from one. As far as I can tell there are no other holes on the tree since I can't see any other oozing spots. The hole is maybe 4 feet up from ground level. Any ideas on how to handle this?
