I know that everyone is in a different growing zone and some places are warm while others are getting close to the first frost dates, while still others, like where I am, are having nice fall temperatures that allow for the cultivation of cool weather crops or the a second growing of some plants normally set out in spring.

I'm in an in between place and wondering what seeds if any I could start now (keeping in mind I can move things to the greenhouse in December or January as it becomes necessary). Of course, anything I start would have to live in a container, so what do you all think? Especially those in the southern part of the U.S.

I'm also in the southern united states (south carolina) and am interested in this question as well. Unfortunately, I don't know how to answer your question. There a lot of people who are a lot more informed than me on these subjects on the forum. I'm sure we will have an answer soon.

How cold does it get there, @gmckee1985? I am thinking I may just go for it - if I can get the seeds to germinate, that is. August seems to be the ideal time for starting seeds, but I'm going to see if some of those tricks for sprouting them sooner will work. The weather has been great lately and if winter is as mild as summer was, I might be able to get the plants to harvest before any harsh cold sets in.

Well, I've learned that because it is still so warm here at this time of the year I could still be planting and growing into January, even without the greenhouse. You never know if winter will turn harsh, but those temps usually only last for a few days and the real worry is usually over night.

I'm in Texas, and I started some tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers from seed on Christmas day. I don't have a green house so the seedlings will have to stay indoors.

Do you always start them this early? You must be in the southern part of Texas where it doesn't snow. I'm not too far from the coast, so we don't have hard winters. I just took some cuttings from my cherry tomato plants which kept producing all summer and are still flowering and fruiting. I used willow water and stuck them in soil so I'm hoping they take.

I'm a newbie at gardening, so I just follow Chuck's advice because he's in the same area. It works really great for me ;)

What's willow water?

I am in the Mid-Atlantic region of the states and winter is here, we have had some very cold nights already. I will not think about starting seedlings until March as it starts to warm up, we will still have cold weather and will not be able to but plants out until the end of April. It is nice to be in a warm area that you can plant outside most of the year.

It's a sort of tea made from willow twigs that you can use in the garden instead of rooting hormone.

I usually buy plants at the nursery. I started some seeds successfully in August year before last, but I don't really have the space to do it properly. I'm trying to get a space together outdoors to be able to do it, but the weather is unpredictable. lately I have been trying my hand at propagating cuttings.
