Hi there. First year clematis but one big flower now nothing much just lots of tiny blooms not even climbing up trellis. Complete waste of money. Looks like it gets dug up. Any ideas of why none bloom?

Have you got the roots in shade?
Have you got it in a rich, water-holding soil with good nutrition?I

You have to be patient with plants. They don't always grow like they've been in the ground all their lives when you first get them. They usually sleep the first year, while establishing a good strong root system, then they creep the next year, do a bit better and the third year they leap. ( All dependent upon if they're well taken care of, are planted in the right place, and have the right soil condition.

They also like a neutral PH in well draining soil. Do you know what your soil PH is? Limey or acidic.

Water once weekly and water deeply. Clematis need roots in deep soil so they stay cool. Clay soil is not the best for clen
matis, it doesn't drain well. If you added compost and grit to your soil, it would be happier.

Gardeners and patience go together.😉😉😉 This will help you!! You keep on gardening, you will grow much more patient. As my Gran always used to tell me when I'd hound her with " Isn't supper ready yet? " for the tenth time, She'd turn and look at me and say: "Patience is a virtue".
Then go back to cooking. 😄

The people who sold the plants told me nothing!:(
They just assume that you know. Most will be more than happy to tell you all about it if you just ask. Or you can find care instructions on almost every plant on the internet. I always look up the plants needs because there are so many beautiful plants that I would love to grow but they wouldn't be at all happy in my hot climate, so I have to pass on those.

Don't think i got any instructions but was rushing to get them sorted in greenhouse. More haste less speed and they are not getting full sun. May start again next year. This is supposed to be therapeutic too! :(

You could just transplant them to a sunny position next spring. They love to climb up roses or other bushes that are in full sun. Prepare a nice deep hole for them, test to see your soil is neutral, add lots of compost, water the hole until it's full of water, then wait for the water to all drain away. This gives the roots wetness deep down where the roots will go and stay cooler.

When that's finished plant your clematis. I also use a trellis for them, something with lots of round steel bits. Then water weekly if you've had no rain and add fertilizer monthly during growing seasons. Give them a chance to become established, get a big root system. This takes a couple years before you get a large display.
