Hello all,

New to the forum. New to gardening. I have some projects I want to do this year and hopefully you will be able to guide me through some issues that I am sure will "pop up"

Home is a small town in West central Indiana.... looks to be USDA zone 5B

I have spent my life in the Industrial Maintenance line of work doing everything from mechanical to electrical and high tech instrumentation. Life long steel fabricator...... which is where I am wanting to start with my first project. I want to build an all steel oval pergola that is raised about 12 to 15 ft above grade level. Basic idea is 2 steel posts with the oval mounted on top and of course multiple cross beams. I am also going to build a somewhat large (8ft) round swing to hang in the center. Should be large enough for 3 or 4 to sit comfortably.....similar to http://www.dwellingdecor.com/22-creative-outdoor-swing-bed-designs-for-relaxation/

So as far as the flowers go.... I am really considering trumpet vines or maybe a species of wisteria to create a thick foliage shade. This will be in the middle of the yard, in direct sunlight away from any buildings. Another idea I have is to attach a flower box to the swing and grow some sort of vine on the swing itself. I am assuming that there will be lots of pruning to be done to keep the two vines separated.

SO
your thoughts, suggestions, concerns or other great ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What vine might you plant in the flower box on the swing?

I look forward to getting to know some of you

Welcome to the forum! :)

Your pergola sounds like an interesting project, I look forward to seeing it develop. Re wisteria, it's beautiful but very prolific! Loves full sun though, so it would probably do very well.

Welcome to the forum, CAPtain232!

I would plant clematis vines, with the wisteria. (But then I love all purple/pink flowers.:D )

Here is what they look like:

I remember trumpet vines from when I was a kid, we'd pull off the flowers, stick them on our fingers and chase each other around with our "claws!!" Yeah, good times.

I don't remember what they smell like, so I tried to search them. Apparently they attract hummingbirds, which is cool, but they are REALLY invasive. From what I read on this website, you'll spend more time pruning and controlling spread than you will sitting in your swing!!  The article also said it takes several years of growth to get flowers. I've never grown them, but after reading that, I'd be wary!!

Please post pictures of the project in progress, and finished with plantings! :)
