I planted a couple of items in the front of the house this spring. They grew very well but I'm not sure which I need to bring in for the winter (pics are attached). I live in Northern Jersey.

Pop,

The hosta and the rose will be fine, but you have planted a houseplant: Tradescantia. That one is worth digging up, potting and keeping as a houseplant. annuals: Dusty miller, Coleus, ansd Persian shield plant. The latter is perennial only in zones 10+. I would not bother bringing them in except for the Persian Shield. It will likely come back in spring. You can save seed from the Coleus to plant again next spring though. The dusty Miller you just toss.

Dear Annie Kay,

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and write back. I will just toss the dust miller like you suggested. Also, try to bring in as much of the tradescantia as I can. The Persian shield I guess also bring in. But as for the coleus they are so tall shouldn't I bring those in also?

Take care.

I thought 'Blimey, the Channel Islands are warm enough.'. Doh, not that Jersey :)
The coleus can survive and come back in a very warm climate, but I doubt digging it up and bringing it in will do it much good, and they are usually grown as annuals, you will probably get a better result for a lot less trouble that way.

It all makes a nice looking group of foliage.

Like Olly said, Coleus are annuals so they will die at end of fall, they're only meant to live a year and produce seed before they die. If you save the seed from those flower spikes you can plant the seed in January inside on a sunny windowsill then plant out your new plants in spring after the last frost is over. No sense keeping those.

Many are perennials, there are some annuals, however they thrive in all year round, warm, moist, climates and any which have to survive a winter of almost any sort will come back as such miserable plants it's not worth trying, so most people grow them as annuals. The exception is pot grown plants which are kept in an artificial environment over winter, don't go back out until temperatures start to hit the 70's, and come back in before the end of Summer. I really don't think they would like being transplanted and brought in, not worth it when first year plants are so successful.

PS The pot growing works because they are really unfussy about light levels.
