Hi all, I am looking for ideas for what to plant under some plane trees. It must be low maintenance, very low height and UK native. The main aim is to improve biodiversity of an area that is currently paved.

My initial ideas are:
- Fern garden
- Moss lawn

What does everyone think?

For planting under plane trees, consider:

  • Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum) - Thrives in shade, adds greenery.
  • Lungwort (Pulmonaria spp.) - Hardy, shade-tolerant with early flowers.
  • Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa) - Low-growing, delicate spring blooms.
  • Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum) - Fragrant, good ground cover.
  • Harts Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) - Robust fern for shady spots.
  • Common Dog Violet (Viola riviniana) - Low-growing violet, great ground cover.
These could complement your fern garden and moss lawn ideas nicely!
