I'm looking for a mulch to use on my Onions and Garlic. How is Longleaf Pine Straw? The package says it's great, but what say you??
When I lived in Houston I used pine straw/needles for mulch and it worked well. It did not change/lower the soil Ph at all. I remember I had some mini floods and the stuff did not wash away like other mulches. I would use it where I am now but it is unavailable.

Where I live is called the Piney Woods for a reason. I've used pine straw including long leaf as a mulch for decades and its great stuff, IMO

I have my blackberry and blueberry bushes mulched with White Pine needles. They work great. All I have to do is rake them up and put them down. Couldn't imagine anything else working better for those plants although I haven't used it on onions or garlic.

I think of pine as acidic and garlic likes alkaline, but I am not sure what 'Pine straw' consists of. I give them a bit of wood ash from time to time.

Longleaf pine trees annually deposit a blanket of needles on the forest floor, often called pine straw. This volume can easily be doubled or tripled if the owners are more aware of this opportunity and if the market expands through sales promotion in our northern states.

Longleaf pine straw can be a great option for mulching onions and garlic. It has a nice texture and can help to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and moderate soil temperature.

When using pine straw as mulch, it's important to spread it evenly around the plants to a depth of about 2 to 3 inches, being careful not to pile it up against the stems. This can help to prevent rot and other moisture-related issues.

It's also important to note that pine straw can be acidic, which may not be suitable for all plants. However, onions and garlic are typically acid-loving plants, so this should not be an issue.

Overall, if you like the look and feel of longleaf pine straw, it can be a great option for mulching your onions and garlic. Just be sure to apply it properly and monitor your plants to ensure they are thriving.

I had thought that garlic is a lover of neutral , or slightly acidic soil , but disliked the extremes either way. It certainly likes wood ash, which is quite alkaline, on my acidic soil.
