Growing up, a summer treat was Watermelon from the grocery store.

Each late winter, paper catalogs arrived in the mail from various seed companies
with tempting descriptions and photos.

I persuaded my parents to give me a small portion of the garden to try out "New Hampshire Midget" watermelons.
The size of a Cantaloupe melon Unfortunately we didn't have an irrigation system. The melons grew to full size and when the vines were
dying back, I harvested. No red flesh inside, just solid light green pith. Not enough water.
Before the internet, and with a limited budget for paper books on gardening, sometimes you couldn't know until you tried.

Thats common for first time water melon grows. Its hard to be patient with melons because they look so good. I've done the same thing with melons. Today I wait for the yellow spot on the bottom the the melon to form. When it turns yellow on the bottom and the stems dry out it's time to harvest. I love fresh-picked hot melons right off the vine.
