Is the length of a carrot dependent upon the amount of growing space?

You don't have to put anything around the cardboard to contain the moisture. It stays damp on it's on (with regular watering) and holds it's shape for several weeks until you are ready to transplant. Because it naturally breaks down once planted in soil you bury the whole thing, tube and all.

Aha, toilet paper and paper towel tubes! I like the newspaper ones as well. I'm starting some broccoli seeds I have. I'll be getting some carrot seeds next week. We'll see how it goes.

I tried making the newspaper ones, but my pages weren't the same size as the ones used in the tutorial I followed. I ended up with too small flaps, also they tear easily. I think for the amount of labor it takes to make them, it's a lot simpler just to use the cardboard tubes.
