I got my gardening enthusiastics for my mother. She opened up a gardening shop if we never had a decorated home. And then, as if I got some gardening fever, I wanted to put so many plans inside my house and outside it too. I gathered some stones, leaves, even weed... That's how I started started, anyway! What's your story?

Gardening isn't contagious, but it is addictive! I started out as a five year old pulling weeds out of my family's vegetable garden. They allowed me to weed the onions--even a five year old can tell a weed from an onion!
When I was 10 I received a rose bush for my birthday, and that started my life-long love of roses.
Now that we are on a small farm we have three vegetable gardens, two herb beds, flower beds, and three "experimental" beds in back of the barn. The soil is sandy there due to pigs being kept in that part of the barn years ago, so we put root crops in there--great for carrots, turnips, and potatoes!
I am a plant addict, and I'm not ashamed!

What's your story?

It wasn't contagiousness that got me into gardening, but I imagine it can happen, and I hope native gardening is contagious.

I got started when I wanted to attract more animals and insects to my yard. I love nature and I wanted some of it in my yard. I added a pond with a small surrounding garden. You could say I was gardening a little selfishly. I was doing it to attract animals and insects, but I wasn't doing it for animals and insects, I was doing it for me. I didn't care how much the garden benefited them as long as I saw them in it.

Not too much later, it evolved into gardening for them. I changed my gardening ways and made it all about them. I removed an 8' by 8' section of lawn and started a native garden. I've already expanded it twice, and have also added a few other 3' by 3' native gardens. I'm still working on removing and replacing the non-native, non-beneficial plants from my original pond garden, and that too will become a native garden. It works out better, for both me and wildlife. I get to enjoy some of the coolest native plants ever, and native insects and animals get a little bit of their much needed habitat back.

I started selfishly, but ended up gardening selflessly, and I feel rewarded for it in so many ways.

I think it's inspiring seeing others gardening projects and the way they do things. I guess any time I see anyone passionate about anything, it gets me interested - and I often want to learn more about exactly what makes it so much fun for them. I've definitely gained encouragement from seeing what others do, learning from them, and wanting to incorporate their methods and stylings into my own garden setup.

Yes it is! My son caught the enthusiasm from me, two of my friends get excited about getting my seedlings and they didn't garden before meeting me. We're all talking about growing things and it is only just now January!!

I don't think it is contagious, it depends on the inclination of the person. Like me, I am not a gardener and until now I cannot say that I am a gardener because my main participation in the garden is the harvesting. And although I am learning the trade bit by bit but I am not eagerly participating in the gardening. By the way, we harvested 2 banana plants yesterday and here are the bunches for the souvenir pic -

My mom and aunt loved gardening very much, but I don't think it's contagious;) My boyfriend doesn't care about plants, even though I keep bringing new ones to our apartment.
My sister and my dad don't like gardening either.

I think it is contagious in a way since every time I read someone is able to grow this or that, I just want to get out and do it myself. I have a tiny area in the back yard of my home now, but I love to grow herb in pots on my deck. My sister caught the enthusiasm bug from me, and started to gardening after swearing that it is not for her :)

Well, I think i got this from my biological dad (before he left). He was the one who brought home some cutting for me to plant when I was really young. He had always been interested in growing things, mostly chillies and tomatoes. I was more interested in growing ornamentals... my mom has never been interested in anything, lol. Her mom liked plants though, but I guess she wasn't so enthusiastic, so I didn't really think it was that cool. I still have plants that are direct descendants from the cuttings she gave me though :p

My great-grandparents had a contract with the Cummins Can Company raising tomatoes.
My grandparents have huge vegetable gardens.
