It wasn't contagiousness that got me into gardening, but I imagine it can happen, and I hope native gardening is contagious.
I got started when I wanted to attract more animals and insects to my yard. I love nature and I wanted some of it in my yard. I added a pond with a small surrounding garden. You could say I was gardening a little selfishly. I was doing it to attract animals and insects, but I wasn't doing it
for animals and insects, I was doing it for me. I didn't care how much the garden benefited them as long as I saw them in it.
Not too much later, it evolved into gardening for
them. I changed my gardening ways and made it all about them. I removed an 8' by 8' section of lawn and started a native garden. I've already expanded it twice, and have also added a few other 3' by 3' native gardens. I'm still working on removing and replacing the non-native, non-beneficial plants from my original pond garden, and that too will become a native garden. It works out better, for both me and wildlife. I get to enjoy some of the coolest native plants ever, and native insects and animals get a little bit of their much needed habitat back.
I started selfishly, but ended up gardening selflessly, and I feel rewarded for it in so many ways.
