While waiting for coffee to finish perking this AM I went and took a look out the front window as I often do first thig in the morning, just because. The large black moving mass literally about 4 feet away from me told me my view was a tad different then normal. It was a black bear checking out the bird feeder that had been on hanger mounted between the windows (until the bruin took it down). Quite a surprising thing to see first thing as it walked over the front step. First time I have seen one in our yard although I know they are around.

Back in the seventies we had a cabin just off of Indian lake, NY. Turns out this black bear wanted some of the coffee my mom was brewing.
Just as he/she busted down the front door my father pulled up. Pulled the rifle off the rear window rack, and dropped it in the living room. Ah fun times!

Whoo, I guess I won't complain about skunks and armadilloes again! Bears are moving back into their range here in Texas--East Texas and up from Mexico into South Texas. I'm all for bears, but not in my backyard!
Everbrown, that may be the first bear sighting in your yard, but probably not the last!
Licenter, if your father and his rifle hadn't been handy, would your momma have given the bear a whack with her cast iron frying pan?

Yikes! This is the kind of thing I have nightmares about! I love animals, wild and domestic, but I don't think I could feel comfortable with bears in my yard!

Whoa..glad you were not outside and walking up on this surprise! That would be an awful encounter. Make sure your front door is locked :)

I don't think a locked door would stop a black bear. OMG!!! Glad everyone is ok.

Oh yes the bears are coming out to eat now and sightings are way more likely. I made a post here about 3 weeks ago because my kids spotted a bear in our yard. It apparently had a cub according to the neighbor, so the Department of Wildlife came out and set cages up in the woods. I don't know if the bear and baby were ever transported.
