Indoor roses?

Does anyone have any experience with growing roses indoors? I used to have a very large rose garden when I was married... the roses were among the things left behind. My daughter had bought me a stumpy little rose bush for the first Mother's Day we were living here. It was just a little inexpensive bush, that I had actually doubted would survive.

Well it did survive and it actually thrived quite nicely!

This past season it was over 10' high and loaded with hot pink flowers. It was planted by the stairs leading up to my front door and would have to be trimmed back because it would spill over the hand rail of the stairs. My ex-husband remarked at the size of the plant one day and the princess told him it was the one she had bought for me... a few weeks later the plant died of mysterious causes... much to my upset and even more so my daughters.

Anyyyyyyyyyyway... It's been suggested that perhaps I should try an indoor rose to eliminate any future "growing" problems?

Any suggestions or advice?

I grow miniature roses indoors. They're my favorite plants, I love them:)
Miniatures are relatively easy to grow. I water them when their soil seems dry, fertilize them twice a month and cut off withered flowers, that's all. Unfortunately, they go dormant in winter:(

Hi Claudine, thank you for responding! How much sun? When they go dormant, is there any special treatment during this time?

I love rose gardens and there is palce here that has a huge outdoor garden with roses of all kinds in it. It truly is a beautiful flower. I bought a rose bush and tried to grow it indoors but it just did not survive. I have put it outside now to revive it but it has had a bud and then it vanished. I think I bought it from a store with heavy refrigeration and when I brught it home into the normal air it didn't last. Perhaps using ice water every day might work I am going to try again.

I'm always happy to help:)
Most roses like a lot of sun. I know that mine do. This is why I keep them on a windowsill.
In autumn, when their leaves turn yellow, you need to move your roses to a colder place. The temperature there shouldn't exceed 10°C.

Oh that's such a shame about your lovely roses, what a jerk :(. I don't have experience growing my own yet, though roses are one plant that I would love to add to my indoor gardening tool belt as well. The miniatures that Claudine suggested sound perfect for that sort of thing :).

I think I might also try the miniatures so that it could be a little easier to manage. I do love the look of them and my mom has managed to grow such beautiful roses in so many different colours and I just cannot do the same.

Claudine, I have lovely red miniature roses that have just finished flowering and I was thinking I had to let them go dormant. Does yours eventually drop all or almost all the leaved like the ones outside? I have been reluctant to set it anyplace to cold because they seem to so fragile, right now they are green so I know I nee to do something. They just did fabulous this year, I got them at Easter and then put them outside for the warmer months and they bushed right out like you would not believe. How often do you water when they are dormant?

Some of my roses drop all their leaves, some don't. Currently, I keep most of them in the attic, where it's around 4°C. One rose seems fragile and has many new stems and leaves, so for now I store it in a warmer place, where it's around 12°C. I think I'll move it to the cold attic in two or three weeks.
When my roses are dormant, I water them once every two weeks.

The mini roses maybe the answer to your desire to have indoor roses. Indoors or outdoors the roses will go dormant during the winter months.
