About ten days ago We went out for a meal with out daughter and to a show she was in, did a lot more walking than normal and the coming home walked up Villiers St. from Embankment tube to Charring cross and then up the staircase into the emergency side exit from the station, it's a steep stair and halfway up my leg started to fail. It has been hurting ever since, but started to feel better the last couple of days. Today I was planting a row of potatoes and stepped off the bed which is raised about nine inches onto the path. My leg landed on the path and simply failed, crumpled under me and I pitched forward face first. I wasn't hurt, but my head was downhill on the path and it took an age to work myself round into a position I could get to sit up on the edge of the bed and then stand. I'm getting old, my advice, don't do this, stay young.

Chuckle - a good idea but.... You know the routine - eat lots of organic vegetables, exercise and sleep well. Slow down even further. Stay inside more, cook more and write your biography. Catch the train to the city and people watch. Go for a dip in the ocean. The advantage of age is that no one is insisting on you working harder.

I'm getting old too Oliver and can't do anything about it. I tried running, biking, healthy food, and a few other things but it just made me feel good but didn't change my old age. The one thing I can count on is old age, illness and death. As I hit 70 I see this truth plainly. Didn't notice it so much in my 40s, 50s or 60s but I see it everyday now.

I do all that, except for going in our horribly polluted sea, and I am not going to stop insisting I live to the max, but I am afraid I will have to redefine what that is, sigh.

The only fix is to fight back by lifting HEAVY stuff.
Don't care, not giving up my new lightweight shovel.
Thinking about it, I never had much muscle mass in the first place, been between 10stone and 10stone seven just about all my adult life.

The thinking on cholesterol has changed and only a small part is considered dangerous the rest of it is beneficial. I stopped taking the statins and my leg pain disappeared. You might try a three-month trial without statins and see if your legs improve. Normal advice about seeing your doctor should be considered.

A holiday in Madeira or the Azores might be needed if you haven't taken one in years.

Saw the doctor the other day, got him to check all the pulses in my foot, just in case. All fine so almost certainly 'just' muscular, I'm trying to stay out of the garden and give it a few days of continuous rest. I keep getting it almost better, then I do something that involves bending or squatting. Start again!
Never was one for holidays, went to places like France, Mallorca and Barcelona, but got myself a job there and stayed all season, much more fun working with the locals and getting to know them.
I like the way you assume I take statins, doesn't everyone? The drug companies did a real good sales job there.

Statins are a money making scam for doctors and big pharma companies. I don't know very many people over the age of 58 that aren't offered statins. When statins are given for a few years then other medications will follow. Its not uncommon for some older people to take 5 to 15 different medications per day. I have been offered many different medications over the past few years from doctors but refused and today I don't take any kind of medicine.

When I put the big city in my rear view mirror several years ago, I knew that ranching and gardening would keep me active but would not necessarily maintain muscle mass into old age. Solution was to build and outfit my own gym.

I have never regretted that decision and strongly believe it has resulted in benefits beyond my expectations. Quite possibly the best decision I ever made.
