It is a nice container, pity they didn't think up some less obtrusive way of holding it down. Birds do need water in winter, I put it out regularly when it is freezing. Something I found counterintuitive was being told warm water will freeze more rapidly than cold, still don't understand that. A tea light under a ceramic bowl works, but you want a certain depth to stop them burning their feet if they get in :)

It is called the "Mpemba effect" named after a student who discovered it and one cause theory is warm water evaporates more rapidly and as an endothermic process, it cools the water making it freeze more quickly than warm water.
