that was great. I am always lugging a huge bag of bird seed down to the valley, and forgot the zissors. so now I can try that.

With a knife if the strings are cut even with the end of the bag the pull string simply drops out of the knot on the even stitch side and only need be pulled.

Saw someone get their fingers stitched into one of those when I worked at the potato packing factory

Yep, some company leave the end to be opened bit longer than the other side, if it does not open easily then one is trying on the wrong side.
