I have just received my bare root peony - but I'm confused as to which way up to plant it.

I would normally plant them vertically in soil with the eyes pointing upwards - but as you can see from the photograph, the eyes seem to be protruding downwards from the crown - which is not what I was expecting.

I attach two photographs - photograph A and photograph B. I'd be grateful if you let me know which is the correct planting position. Or do I plant it horizontally with the eyes facing upwards?

I wish I could be 100% certain, but if it were mine, I would go with photo A. That looks to me as if the eye is pointing up.

I found this, and wondered if it might help?

Tetters you correct. As something of, 'a rule of thumb'. The big bits, the dangly bits always are the lowest. Dahlias are a good example. Having said that. There are some exceptions. Bulbs will actually turn themselves the right way up. Some other plants/rootstocks will, whilst remaining inthe planted position, they will send out a shoot that will even curve around and upwards. Onions and potatoes are examples.
