Hi all, I'm Jo from somewhere out east of Manhattan. I'm a recent retiree, and my landscaping is a mess, because I have been a roadwarrior for too many years for work. I would like to get my flower beds in better shape this year. Right now it's a mishmosh. A row of variegated hostas along the front of the house with whatever, planted here and there behind the hostas, close to the porch.

Big problem with the hostas is the local deer consider them to be a free salad bar every summer.

So, my first question is: what plants (if any) are helpful in keeping the deer out of my gardens?

Hi there! Welcome to the forums :) So sorry to hear about your deer issues, sadly I have no idea what plants could help you ward deer off, but I am sure one of our most knowledgeable members will know :) If you don't get a reply here, then please feel free to create your own thread and ask this same question.

Welcome to Gardening forums :)

I would imagine spikey plants like Gorse, but they might keep you off the garden too :D

Deer don't like strong odors, so rosemary repels them, along with basil and lavender. Rosemary is perennial and is culinary--gets my vote!
