I just bought some tomato plants from the local nursery(not a big box store). I planted them in larger containers last Sunday. Yesterday this plant started to droop, so I thought it was a sign it needed some water. I put some in, I don't think I put too much. Today these gray areas started to show up in the middle of the leaves. I have never seen this before. I have also been pinching off some leaves that have gone bad and that is the picture included. They are showing up on the bottom set of leaves. Can I just take those branches off? Any help would be appreciated, I do not want to lose these things so quickly..

Mostly what you are seeing is transplant shock, changing their environment. I would not do anything at this time. Give them a week and see if the problem persists. Do not water too often, just keep the soil barely moist and make sure they get plenty of sunshine. You might have to remove the lower limbs later but just wait and see if you really have to.

Chuck,

Thanks for responding. I hope it's just transplant shock. The leaves were curling also, hopefully that's not a problem as well. I put them into a good soil mix. In the hole I put some calcium nitrate, azomite and a little epsom salt, then covered that with a layer of soil, then put the plant in.

Chuck,

The plants today were in bad shape. The leaves were soft and wilted. And more of that grayish/brown on the leaves also. I watered them because the wilting seemed like they needed water.I don't understand what is going on with these things.

If the soil is even slightly damp do not water. If it were me I would spray them with hydrogen peroxide and see if that doesn't stop the graying as it may be a fungus. It could also be possible that the roots are in direct contact with high percentage nitrogen. If that is the case the leaves will turn completely brown and die. If so the plant may survive but with a limited root system which in turn will limit production

This past Saturday I purchased 3 tomato plants from a nearby garden center(no big box). The 2 that I have I transplanted into 20 inch containers. I put the third one into a 5 gallon bucket and gave it to my 11 year old niece. All 3 have the same soil mix. They were planted on the same day. Mine are the pictures attached in this thread. The one I gave to my niece is in great shape. Healthy, sturdy, good green color. Very few small spots or blemishes. I don't understand how that one can be so different than the 2 I have. Same variety.

These problems started before I even watered them. They were getting these brownish/grey coloring through most of the leaves, then wilting. There's enough drainage. Let's see what they look like tomorrow. If they are still as bad as they were earlier, I will take another picture so you can see. I have never seen anything this bad. If I have to, I will dig them out and take them back to the garden center and ask them to replace them.

Yeah, so I called the garden center I bought them at and told them the problem. They asked me to bring one of them so they could take a look at it. I dug it out and put it into a smaller pot and they took one look at it and said that thing is dead. They had no idea what could have caused it. They did give me 3 new plants free, so hopefully these don't die on me as well.
