I have lived in this house for about 3 years and we have just recently started spending a lot of time cleaning up the yard, flowerbeds, etc. We have finished most of the front yard except for this mostly shady left side. Can anyone help me identify both of these shrubs?

We have another one of the shrub on the right which we trimmed and shaped. The one in this picture we let grow naturally. The one on the left has needles and smells sort of like a Christmas tree, and very, very sweet :)

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

The one on the left that smells sweet looks like a Cryptomeria I think. Not sure about the other one, does it flower ?

Well, it looks like a Forsythia leaf - but obviously that has yellow flowers in the springtime

could also be yew maybe on the left?
I think you may well be right about that Darren, although I seem to remember propagating a variety of Cryptomeria at the nursery like it. I cannot remember offhand whih one it was, and there are of course several varieties that look quite different ........:confused:
