Hello everyone! I have been busy getting my garden ready for winter. How has everyone been doing with those who deal with winter? Does anyone winter garden?

Enjoy your Winter rest. The stereotypical image of the northern gardener in Winter is being snug by the fire, sipping cocoa and leafing through the seed catalogs. With any luck, I'll get to play in the rain and mud.

I am a northern gardener. I do not have a conservatory, but there are many houseplants. And I will look after them all winter. Phalaenopsis, Begonia lorraine, Impatiens , Christmas cacti are blooming now. Clerodendrum schmidtii will bloom in winter.
I planted the flower bulbs in pots for early blooming in the house. Crocuses and hyacinths.

And the garden, yes, freezes.

Mostly I am just making sure ground is clean, and rough digging a few new patches to give the weather a chance to break up the soil a bit. I have leeks going, and I have planted garlic and broad beans outdoors, more beans going in in a bit for succession harvesting. The other day I sowed a row of lambs lettuce in the greenhouse as well.
I have been moving tender things like pellagoniums, salvias, succulents, and datura (brugmansia) into the greenhouse , we had a slight touch of frost the other morning.

Wow! These images are breathtaking. Are these your flowers? Which one is the clerodendrum?

I'm a weekend gardener. I live in the city and come to the country house for weekends and vacations.
So now I am concentrating on home gardening.

This is how my clerodendrum looks like in winter.

Now my phalaenopsis continue to bloom, a lot of new buds.

The pink flower beads behind this one is Begonia lorraine.

This is also a begonia, one of my favorites. It has no tubers, only roots.

This is how my crocuses look in spring. I plant the bulbs in the fall and leave it on the cold balcony.

And these are the last apples from the garden.

I do not know how I could live in winter without plants in the house.

What a lovely array of colourful blossoms. Is that a vivid purple Streptocarpus peeking out as well? Your Bridalveil Glorybower (Clerodendrum laevifolium, synonym: C. wallichii) is particularly nice to see as it is not commonly cultivated in my region. Outside in my garden there are Autumn Crocus blooming now: C. pulchellus and C. speciosus.

This is Clerodendrum schmidtii. It is very similar to clerodendrum laevifolium, but the flowers are slightly different.
The flower branches of Clerodendrum schmidtii are pinker in color. I they are more subtle, I think.
The flower branches of Clerodendrum laevifolium are greener in color. But this is my visual impression.

The bright purple flower is achimenes. I grow this in abundance to decorate my summer balcony in the city.

Hello @NativeOddity I've got some plans for the winter in the garden but don't know if I'll get around to it, I have to have cataract surgery tomorrow on my right eye and that will take 6 weeks. Then I've got to have the other one done in the new year. But I want to replace some of the current bushes.

If it is any reassurance, Logan I had cataract surgery some years ago; not nearly as disruptive as I was told it might be, I think they cite the worst case scenario. And because they chose lenses to match my eye as much as possible my sight is much better, I was very short sighted before, now just slightly astigmatic.

Thank you Oliver Buckle that's very reassuring of you. Yes it was fine and only lasted 10 minutes and out sooner than what they put in the information. But a great hospital and I would recommend to anyone, the only thing traveling to it with all the traffic. Just got to wait another week so I can start to bend forward more and be able to walk the dogs by myself.
