Something that looks a bit like a mealworm was found while washing out some stump mulch around a hickory or oak. What is it? What was it eating?

That is the harmful larvae of a click beetle called a wire worm. Their main menu is your vegetables roots. I don't know of any effective means of controlling them except beneficial nematodes and your thumb and forefinger.
