I have been contemplating growing sod as an experiment to see how easy/difficult it would be. The area I would be covering is a strip of ground that bumps up to a sidewalk, probably no more than 12 feet long and 1.5 feet wide.
I do not have a greenhouse so I would have to grow it on something outside (on the front lawn) and keep it covered with a row cover so the weeds don't get in it. Kentucky Bluegrass is the seed I am considering.
I am considering growing the sod on a plastic sheeting with bricks along the edge to keep the dirt in place until the grass' root system can hold it all together.
My question: if anyone has grown sod, how deep should the dirt be that I plant my Kentucky Bluegrass in? What other considerations should I be thinking on for growing sod? If my experiment is successful, I will attempt to tackle the front yard next (which also is not a very big area).
