For container culture, try to find one or Mirabelle cultivars that are grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock.
Another option would be to bud graft more than one Mirabelle cultivar onto some kind of dwarf plum.
Even with a dwarfing rootsotck, it would be good to use as large a container as possible, at least 15 gallons or larger.
Growing more than one cultivar is recommended to insure proper cross-pollination.
Mirabelle Plums (Prunus x domestica var. syriaca, or alternatively Prunus x syriaca) are a group of related plum cultivars mostly grown in western Europe. They share similar ancestry with other European Plums (Prunus x domestica), being complex hybrids involving the Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera), Sloe (Prunus spinosa), and possibly some other species. Mirabelle plums benefit from cross-pollination. Popular Mirabelle Plum cultivars include 'Geneva Mirabelle', 'Mirabelle de Metz', Mirabelle de Nancy', 'Parfume de Septembre', and 'Reine de Mirabelle'. Claims are made that some cultivars are better for preserves and others are better for eating fresh.
