Green Manure

Green manure is a term used to describe specific plant or crop varieties that are grown and turned into the soil to improve its fertility.
Examples of green manure crops include legume plants and grass mixtures. Do you have green manure crops in your garden?

I am fond of peanuts and I usually buy a kilo of raw peanuts when available in the market. My husband would occasionally plant peanuts in the backyard particularly in the vegetable beds. He said that peanuts releases nitrogen in the soil thus making the soil fertile for other plants. Indeed it is called green manue. I didn't know that term before.

Never heard of the term before. I have started a compost heap this year and along with brown paper bags and kitchen scraps I'm layering it with lawn clippings. But that's not the same thing as turning over a crop into the soil. At the start of winter I pull pretty much everything out of the vegetable beds.

I've all ways called it green composting, all the weeds and clover I pull from the flower beds I dig them back in. I also my compost bins that I use for my veggie garden and roses.
