i see you are discussing grafting gooseberries ,well i use to belong to gardeners world in 1960,and then we found the only way was called piece root grafting .i have done this a lot now in peace root graft you graft another type gooseberry to you gooseberry root ,but as the red,yellow,black currants are all ribes it can be done, i have just moved in to a house which garden has been left in it i found the american black berry which the stem is 2 inches thick .i have taken a cutting from this 4 ft long hoping it roots to make a splendid standard which i could graft with a gooseberry or red ,black current, if you would like to look up on the internet gardeners world robert peter dunford you will see all my research coming up.but that was 60 years ago
