A row of garlic was pulled for drying. The bulbs are solid with no bursting so some were left in the ground to mature more. The scapes were left on and formed bulbils or seeds which can be used in cooking. I also wrapped some clusters in gauze to mature into bulbils. The gauze prevents dispersal as they mature.

Some elephant garlic was also pulled. Elephant garlic has nodules on the bulb which are clones which are viable and can be planted.
For the main crop, for the seed cloves, I let the bulbs burst which makes for larger cloves for planting. I find this seems to have little effect on shelf life in practice.

I have got to try garlic somewhere sunnier in my garden. Where I have them now is very nutrient dense, but too shady for the bulbs to grow well. I envy anyone who can get good garlic. *sob*

Your garlic looks great! I have always bought dried garlic from the store and have not seen fresh pulled from the ground like this. Can you eat or use it while it is in this stage or do you have to wait for the skin to dry up?

My mother in law used to cook garlic stems that sometimes include the young garlic. She said that young garlic is rare since it is only sold in the rainy season – those are garlic that are harvested early to avoid being drenched in too much water because the garlic will just die. My mother in law would mix the young garlic in Chinese noodle called sotanghon. Another ingredient for that is the Chinese mushroom. And for flavoring, bits of pork are included.

I have a garlic question, I noticed that I had garlic growing along some onions. To the best of my knowledge onions do not get the same type of flower that garlic does (does it?) Do I cut the flower for the onions like I do on the garlic or leave it alone? I am thinking when my brother sent me the sets he had some of the garlic mixed in by accident, is that okay? This is the first year I have ever tried my hand at this plant, so I am still learning about it. Any advice appreciated

I love garlic but have not tried to grow it before. I am convinced the amount of garlic I consumed is directly related to how rarely I ever get sick. I seem to get sick much less than most people I know and eat a lot more garlic. One may not have anything to do with the other, but who knows.
