I don't live in the inner city, but I live in an urban area. I think it would be defiant to plant gardens in the inner city because you're defying the filth, graffiti, and urban sprawl by creating something beautiful, innocent and natural. That's probably also the reason it's therapeutic.
I find gardening the most relaxing. Whenever I feel too stressed, I do something for my roses: I prune them or water them or just look at them - and it always helps. Fortunately in my city there are lots and lots of trees, parks and gardens but I believe that in some cities people really miss the nature.
Yeah, I agree. I had never felt as relaxed as when I did gardening, but it requires a lot willpower and discipline to do it every year... all year long! I look forward to trying it again, but this time I hope I can keep myself doing it all year long, watching over my edibles carefully.
I agree with him, a garden in the inner city will make me feel more at home. More relaxed. More like there is an actual planet with plants and trees and flowers in which I am living on rather than just constant technology, cars and crime.
I don't know that people think of it as defiant, but in a sense, it is defying the norm of a city. If you are in a big city and still put out your pots in every window and on your patio and make things grow in spite of everything being paved and (in my opinion) rather ugly around you, that is kind of defying expectations.
