Just getting a little nostalgic with my gardening thoughts tonight...I was wondering, how old were all of you when you first started gardening? Do you remember what was in your first garden?

I was very young when I first helped my grandmother with gardening, maybe 5 years old or so? I don't remember specifics but it was entirely flower gardening at the time, no vegetables or fruits or herbs at that point. I still had a lot of fun helping out, though :).

I wasn't really into gardening before because I hated getting my hands and feet dirty. However, about a year ago, my mom kind of persuaded me to do it with her. I tried buying seeds and planting some okras. I was successful. :D The rest is history!

I was forced into gardening as soon as I was big enough to wield a rake and a hoe and pull up weeds. Been doing it ever since

When I was about five, my daddy let me weed the onions in our family garden. I could tell what was a onion and what wasn't, and I was close to the ground! Then for my 10th birthday, I received a rose bush. By that time I was pretty good at vegetable gardening, and ready to branch out (pun intended). I've been at it ever since, and thoroughly enjoying gardening.

I don't remember what was specifically mine. I helped my family grow fushias and pansies and a few other things. I tried to grow potatoes once but do to almost complete shade they only grew to be the size of marbles, it was very disappointing. I also tried carrots as a kid, but had the same problem as there was no place I could get more than about 1 hour of full sun, they never even turned orange.

I've never had a whole garden to myself. I still live with my parents:( When I was a kid, plants didn't interest me at all. I liked sitting at home and reading books.
I fell in love with gardening when my boyfriend gave me my first miniature rose. It happened around four years ago:love:

So interesting how different everyone starts out...loved hearing all your different experiences :). I was pretty reluctant at various points when I was younger as well but I stuck with it growing up and when I stopped for a few years I was surprised how much I missed it.

Claudine, aw :( I hope you're able to have your very own garden soon! I love miniature roses, how lovely :).

I remember my first gardening experience was with my mother at our home and also with my grandmother at her home around age 7. I am now so very grateful that they both gave me such a wonderful experience that it caused me to gravitate more toward solving my health issues naturally and eating more healthy to prevent health problems for me and my family. Our children are now excited about gardening even though we don't have a yard like we used to. Even growing out of pots on our terrace or having a plant in the window is a delight for them. In their eyes, I see the excitement that I had as a child when it all starts to work and you see the fruits of your labor (literally). I always hated the pests except for the worms!

I started off as a late bloomer (pardon the pun): I was sixteen when my family moved from a tiny apartment to a house with a large backyard. It had an avocado tree, an orange tree, and a grapefruit tree. My dad put me in charge of taking care of those trees - watering, fertilizing, trimming, the works. Soon my mom began to make some space near the deck to plant okra. I attended those plants in addition to herbs, perennials, and my own trusty aloe vera shrub.

I hope so:) Having my own garden is one of my biggest dreams! I plan to move in with my boyfriend in the nearest future. Of course we don't have enough money to buy a house yet, so in the beginning I'll only have a bacony for my plants, but it's better than nothing.

I just moved in to our very own house so basically this is my first time to do the garden at my own yard, as we didn't have a yard in our previous house. I was told to hire a professional landscaper to do the garden but I declined. I've seen on TV DIYs for gardening and I am learning from it, so I wanted to do the landscaping and gardening myself. I know the idea was a bit too forward for me but I'd like to do it anyway. I'll be doing it bit by bit, right now i am finishing the landscape and hopefully do the plants next time, it's a bit tiring but very fulfilling at the same time.

Wow, congratulations on your home and garden! That's very ambitious of you, but if you can do it yourself and get that fulfillment than why not? I definitely agree, it's so much more satisfying (and easy on the wallet) to do it yourself :).

I remember my first garden. I was a teenager and my mother helped me cultivate a little area in the back yard to grow a few fruits. I grew watermelon, and squash. I was so proud that I actually got these things to grow. I wanted to go a step further and plant a few trees.

my first garden was actually pretty ridiculous. I was super young and wanted to do it in my moms backyard. well I got all excited and dug a little 4x4 square and planted 2 cherry tomato bushes. I then ended up leaving to go to Florida for 6 weeks so my garden got neglected but my mom did have a nice little harvest for me when I got home. :)

Megankl, that's a really cute memory:D Children are so enthusiastic about little things! When I was a kid, I wanted to grow my own plants, but I didn't dare to plant anything. I guess I was too timid;)
