I always try to grow several new varieties of vegetables each year. I have added a new trellised area to my garden this year and have decided to try a few new varieties of pole beans. What are your favorite beans?

I usually grow three or four types of beans in my garden during the summer. My favorite year in and year out are sweet peas. One of the varities i have always had solid results with are the sugar ann snap peas. They don't require a trellis but i find they are easier to harvest if a trellis is provided.

I usually grow the bush beans and have tried the sweet peas without much luck. I plan to use a kiddie pool this summer to grow my garden in as a raised garden. I will have bush beans in the garden.

Thanks for the advice. I am currently growing a variety of pea called Super Snappy, but I may try the Sugar Ann peas as well. I will make sure to look up the Baguio beans! :)

Pat- I am not a fan of bush beans, but I think I will try a few varieties this year for drying. If you are planning to use a kiddie pool, make sure that you allow for proper drainage. A friend of mine tried this method for a raised bed and did no create adequate drainage. Because of that, his plants did not do well at all.

Definitely as runner beans are easy to grow but are slow to produce flowers in hot dry weather. However bush beans are one of the most trouble-free garden crops and mature just ahead of pole beans.

I got a green bean today at the farmer's market that shocked me. It was a flat green bean. Ok, that part didn't shock me, I've had flat green beans, lol. But seriously, these were thick and had the beans inside, you know the kind of beans that bring up images of being tough and stringy. But the man said, look, no strings, and broke one. Ok, well, I was down to two dollars, and the basket was six. It was a BIG basket, so it was not a ripoff.

As I snapped them for lunch, I saved back some seeds. They may have just been picked too late as most of them were large. But honestly, I'm glad for the seeds. They were the most delicious green bean I have ever had almost. For sure the best flat one. Honestly, I have heard of string less beans, but not really ever experienced them before today. They were So tender and flavorful. I guess they have a name, but they are just stringless flat green beans. And now I have seeds! Yay!

I grew snow beans this year and at first I thought they wouldn't grow as they were kind of looking like they were about to die. As time passed though, they started to get super tall and in the end I had a good harvest from them for about a few weeks, but then the weather became way too hot and they started to die off. I am just glad the harvest was good. Beans are just so easy to grow. It's great!
