Not sure but I was hoping perhaps a crabapple. Reason being is someone offered me a small grafted apple tree, but I just bought 2 cherries and this one needed a cross pollinator. But I noticed this in my neighbor's yard, is this a crabapple? Smells very nice. I am hoping it is because I heard that crabapples are sufficient pollinators for apple trees.

P.S. I made my hubby clip a tiny blossom that hangs over my property but it was very tall LOL

Sorry cannot tell from pics.

It looks like Malus ..or apple.
It is not Cornus.. or Dogwood.

You need to look at leaves/flower structure to determine if it is a cherry or an apple.

Look for the stigma in the centre of the flower.

Cherries have just one stigma which forms one stone.

Apples have 5 stigma which will develop into 5 pips.

Thanks..yes for new pics.
Still cannot see enough detail....the tiny tiny green bits in centre of the flower are the female reproductive "bit" . I think I can count 3.
If you gently pull flower apart I believe you will find 5 in total ...therefore that makes it Apple...Malus sp.
The white bits are the male parts, the stamen of which there are a lot.

I believe it is crabapple as I have one in my backyard, although I can't see the leaves of the one you have. These are the flowers from my crabapple tree, and they have thorns on the branches.

IcyBC..I am very sorry but your pics are not Crab apple.
They show a shrub ....Chaenomeles sp..

They are very different from Apple..Malus sp
In the autumn they have hard almost inedible fruits which make lovely jam and wine.

I have to agree that it is not a dogwood. Dogwoods only have four petals and the leaf structure is completely different. It does look like a fruit tree of some kind, but I can't tell. Why do you want a crab apple tree - they make the most god awful mess, and you really can't eat them - in my experience.

Here's a photo of a dogwood, notice how the leaves have striped indentations (not sure what that's called). It's very distinct.

Here are a couple of crab apples, one with a close up of the blossom, the other so you can see the leaves.

An interesting Christian myth about the dogwood -

From http://www.gardenguides.com/97141-history-dogwood-trees.html

According to the myth, the dogwood tree once grew straight and tall, rather than bent and twisted as it does now. The cross used to crucify Jesus was supposedly made of dogwood. Seeing that the dogwood was distraught over this misuse of its wood, Jesus promised that it would never again be used for this purpose. From that day on, the dogwood was unable to grow straight and tall. Its flower petals took the shape of the cross, each bearing a small red stain like that of a rusted nail.

While an intriguing story, the dogwood has no origins in that part of the world. The story seems to have been generated in the early part of the 20th century.

galmal, this tree is in my neighbors back yard behind me. I was interested in it because someone offered me a small grafted apple tree, but it requires a pollinator. From what I have read, crabapple trees are a sufficient pollinators for many variety of apple trees. Is this a true statement? I just wasn't sure if I had the time and room to plant 2 more trees in addition to the 2 cherries I just acquired. I would like to just have one apple tree for now :)

I took some apples from this tree last year, and here they are. They looked like apples to me :) but if I am wrong, glad to learn something new!

galmal,
Are you sure your 2nd pic is a crab apple.
It has red stamen and looks typical of a Pyrus sp....pear?
3rd pic yes..apple sp.
I'm not 100% sure about the second photo, I snagged it off a website that said it was a crab apple - and as you know, if it's on the internet it must true ... not! ;)

Thanks for pointing that out.

The common name for your fruit is Japanese quince. Not related to the true Quince ..Cydonia oblonga!

Next time you pick one of these hard green fruits try to cut it in half...then cut an apple in half and you will see the difference.

This is your plant.Chaenomeles sp.

Whilst this is an apple...which has just 5 pips in a star shape
